Paying for convenience: Comparing the cost of takeaway meals with their healthy home-cooked counterparts.
Sally Mackay (BCApSc, MSc, DPH) is undertaking a doctorate at the University of Auckland to develop a framework for measuring the cost and affordability of healthy and unhealthy foods, meals and diets as part of INFORMAS (International Network for Food and Obesity / non-communicable Diseases Research, Monitoring and Action Support). She has worked as a public health nutritionist for many years for the Heart Foundation, Nelson-Marlborough District Health Board and the Ministry of Health as well as undertaking a range of contract work. She has an interest in creating healthy food environments and food affordability. Sally is a Registered Nutritionist and is the Registrar for the Nutrition Society of NZ.
Part of her doctoral research involved developing a novel approach for comparing the cost of takeaway meals with healthier meals prepared at home, and factoring the cost of time. A standardised method was developed and this was tested in New Zealand by selecting popular takeaway meals and matching these to their home-made, and home-assembled counterparts.
