Iodine supplements advised for pregnant women
Women need higher amounts of iodine while they are pregnant or breastfeeding so they can produce enough thryroid hormones for both themselves and their babies. These hormones are important in the normal development of the brain and nervous system. It is unlikely that these women will get enough iodine from their diet alone to meet these increased needs.
The New Zealand Ministry of Health, and the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), now recommend:
‘that all women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or considering pregnancy, take an iodine supplement of 150 micrograms each day.
Women with pre-existing thyroid conditions should seek advice from their medical practitioner prior to taking a supplement.’
Tablets containing 150 micrograms of iodine will be available at pharmacies in the future.
